Improving oral health with fluoride treatments

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental conditions, posing a considerable threat to the health of your smile. While decay can be prevented through good oral hygiene and routine dental visits, nearly every adult in America has experienced a cavity at one point in time. At Albrecht Family Dentistry in West Bend, Wisconsin, we can help protect your smile from tooth decay with fluoride treatments.

What are fluoride treatments?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance that has been proven to strengthen the enamel of the teeth. Many have dubbed it “nature’s cavity fighter.” Fluoride works by remineralizing weak or compromised areas of the teeth to prevent a cavity from developing. It has even been proven effective at reversing early signs of decay, potentially avoiding the need for a filling.

Do I need fluoride treatments?

Both children and adults can benefit from fluoride treatments. Research has shown that it can prevent up to a third of cavities. Sources of fluoride can include the water you drink and toothpaste, as well as a special varnish that we apply in the office during a routine preventative care appointment.

How are fluoride treatments applied?

After your routine examination and professional cleaning, the fluoride varnish can be applied to the teeth, and it’s absorbed in a matter of minutes. We recommend not eating or drinking anything for about thirty minutes after applying the fluoride.

The benefits of fluoride treatment

Your tooth enamel is constantly being threatened by acids in the food and beverages you consume, as well as acid produced by plaque. As the acids erode the enamel, tiny holes called cavities will begin to form and require treatment in the form of fillings. Fluoride treatments help remineralize the tooth, strengthening the enamel making it more resistant to decay.
