Understanding Gum Disease
Gum disease develops as plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on the teeth. When the plaque remains on the teeth, the gum tissue will begin to pull away, leaving pockets where bacteria will continue to accumulate and eventually cause infection. Without treatment, the condition can cause further gum recession and tooth and bone loss.
Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease
In its earliest stages, gum disease is often difficult to detect. Individuals may notice bleeding while brushing but dismiss it as nothing to worry about. If you see any of the following symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule an evaluation with your dentist:

Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is an effective method of treating early forms of gum disease. It can be performed as a stand-alone treatment but may also be combined with other therapies such as antibiotics.
The first part of the deep cleaning is scaling, which removes plaque and tartar from the teeth and below the gum line. Next, root planing is when we smooth down the roots to eliminate any remaining bacteria.
Depending on your needs, scaling and root planing may be done in a single appointment or split up into multiple appointments. After Scaling and Root Planing
Following your scaling and root planing, you may notice that your gums feel swollen or tender. Pain medication can be prescribed as needed, but you may see increased sensitivity for up to a week. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check your healing progress and determine if any further treatment is necessary.
